“So, are you going to tell me about the surprise you have for me? You know I hate surprises,” she said.
He was quiet for a few seconds and decided to choose his words wisely before answering her. He’d been feeling some type of way about her for a very long time and although they had remained good friends, he preferred to be her lover…possibly her husband but he didn’t want to go “that far” just yet. The last thing he wanted was to scare her away.
“If I tell you then it’s no longer a surprise,” he replied.
“Well…fine, that’s okay, I’ll be patient and wait. What time are we meeting at the Downtown Loft Lounge tomorrow night?” she asked as she laid across her bed and began twirling her hair with her free hand.
“Hmm…why don’t I pick you up at 7,” he said.
He said this as he kept hoping that she would invite him to her house, so he waited for her response. It’s difficult trying to read emotions through a phone call but sometimes it was quite easy when it came to them since they’d been talking by phone for quite a few months.
“Umm…it’s best if I meet you at the lounge so 7 it is,” she said with a little apprehension in her voice.
He could detect the apprehensiveness in her voice but said nothing. They moved onto other subjects and while they talked and laughed, they realized they had more in common than they initially realized, especially when he was in the friend zone. He continued to sit in the friend zone but in his mind, not for long. He’d have his way sooner rather than later and he believed she wanted the same but was too shy to say it aloud.
As time continued to tick by, they both realized that they had meetings in the morning with their respective jobs, but they weren’t ready to end the call. She was feeling sleepy, but she needed to continue to hear his voice…it was soothing, patient, and relaxing. He was talking a mile a minute and usually that would irritate her with anyone else but with him, she didn’t mind. As he kept talking and she would chime in with “un huh” or “yeah” a few times so that he knew she was paying attention, and she began to think back as to when she first met him but for some reason, she couldn’t recall the details. All she knew is that she was attracted to him and he was attracted to her and for some reason, their connection did not go any further all those years ago.
He continued to talk, and she could feel sleep calling after her and that night her dream would be different…it would include him.
